HOW TO GET THERE:

From Cubao Bus Station in front of Ali Mall you can find a lot of buses going to Bicol. You have a lot of choices to ride going to Tiwi.

Amihan Bus Line – with direct trip to Tiwi leaving at 4:30 PM, ETA 5:00 AM, followed by hourly interval going to Tabaco, Legazpi and Naga.

Cagsawa Bus Line- with 29 seaters plus CR on board.

- Business class without CR

- Last destination is Tabaco City from Tabaco another 15 kilometers trip by jeep going to Tiwi

If in case one bus is full of participants you can ask the driver to proceed to Tiwi.

Surigao Chartered Adventure 2010

On September 17-20, 2010; 3 LOGSAC regular members and 2 guest members have joined the Chartered Adventure at Bislig, Surigao del Sur. The event was dubbed “Kalingawan sa Aylan” which featured prime tourism destinations in Surigao called Hagonoy Island, Tinuy-an Falls and Enchanted River. Participating the event were members of the Mountaineering Federation of Southern Mindanao (MFSM) and Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI).

With me, Jonas, Papong, Dockie and Dancel were some of the delegates from Sta. Cruz municipality. Also joining from Sta. Cruz are members from AMECC group.

First stop was Hagonoy Island. This is a private atoll of Vice Mayor Conrad Cejoco surrounded with a fine white sand and pristine blue waters. It is a 30-minute ride from Mangagoy, the commercial center of Bislig City. While we were enjoying the sights, we were served with sumptuous lunch of fresh seafoods such as squid, crabs, fishes and shrimps. The island also was location of several outdoor games like beach volleyball, kayaking, fressbie, among others. On the evening of the first day was an offering of unlimited dancing the beat of reggae music.

On the second day, we headed our way to Tinuy-an Falls, a captivating waterfall located at the heart of Barangay Borboanan. This waterfall, according to some local folks, serves as Bislig’s window to the world, considering the many tourist arrivals it has generated from domestic and foreign places. There was also a side trip to Hinatuan town during the second day, where an enchanted river was introduced to us. Enchanted river is a blue-colored lagoon, its depth unfathomed until today and has been an abode of assorted fish species.

The officers of MFSM and MFPI ferried back to Hagonoy Island on the third day, while the other participants were sent back home. As part of the MFSM officials, I joined the meeting of the two mountaineering federations. There were a lot of resolutions made up, all relating to policies for the good of the mountaineering community in the Philippines.

We were homeward bound on the fourth day, but before home sweet home, we were treated with a very luxurious dinner by the Department of Tourism XI at Marina Tuna Restaurant, the best tuna restaurant in region XI. It was supposed to be a dinner meeting and farewell party of Ma’am Sonia Garcia, the previous director of DOT who retired from active duty. However, she failed to join the dinner because of more pressing commitment.

Marina Tuna Restaurant served as the breakaway point for MFSM and MFPI delegates. We left the place with numerous smirks on our respective faces.

first off, i would like to extend my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to the team of jay and charmy, both from higher ground and talahib mountaineering clubs in iloilo. their unselfish and gallant help made the national board meeting possible.

i would also like to thank all the board members for coming... except for one whose mother was having a birthday celebration, everyone made it to the meeting in alubihod, guimaras. i could proudly say that this is a first in the modern history of the fed to have all the officers gathered for a meeting. i would also like to thank our resource persons and the rest of the officers for coming. i could say that we were able to achieve something substantial and significant despite the little time we had.

this a start of something beautiful... we are aware of the issues and challenges facing us. however, since we have just barely settled down to our respective roles and task, i ask that you give us a chance to work. we are not deaf and blind to your concerns. however please remember also that it takes two to tango. we could not be effective if you refuse to cooperate. to those who are opposed to the mfpi, its best that you stay outside so that the rest of us could enjoy the camaraderie and warmth of our fellow mountaineers inside the federation without your negative and unhealthy interference or attention-grabbing antics. but we are not closing our doors to you should you eventually decide to rejoin this brotherhood which is the mfpi.

the board has decided to grant autonomous powers to the regional officers. in line with this, the office of the VP has been strengthened and empowered. the president could not be all over at the same time hence his powers has been delegated to the VP's. the VP's are the executive and administrative officers of your region. by empowering them, the office of the mfpi has been brought closer to you. hence they could immediately address your concerns without the bureacratic red tape. the presidents and the rest of the board could not fully relate or empathize to the uniqueness of any concern that may emanate from your region, hence the VP's are the persons most competent to provide specialized answers and create programs that are effective. moreover, the regions are given fiscal autonomy in line with the autnomous powers granted to the officers. the office of the VP could not function without funds. they are also required to provide regular reports in order to promote transparency and confidence among the members. the VP's are given latitude to create sub-offices under their office in order to fully reach out to the all the members within the region. the new VP's are: Roy Palma for Luzon, Ramon Vidal for Cebu and Jun Baccus for Mindanao. it was earlier announced that Danny Sayson was the VP for Mindanao but due to his other commitments, he stepped down in favor of Jun. i appeal to everyone to extend their support to the VP's. address your concerns directly to your VP's. i will not entertain you unless you have gone first to your VP. the national board officers exercise supervision and control of the office of the VP therefore any complaint against official acts of the VP shall be addressed to board.

we have also strengthened the committees and appointed persons most comptent to handle the task and duties of their respective committees. it is our aim to upgrade and standardize the mountaineering skills level of our members. hence the educational committee and the mountain training board has been abolished and in their stead, the technical committee has been created and headed by jong narciso. one of the projects that will be initiated by this committee is the instructors training which will be held sometime late this year or early next year.

another is the revival of the ways and means committee whose task is the management of the funds of the mfpi. this is headed by ice morales. the P.R.O. has also been revived and headed by yay ortega. the corporate secretary is shey guttierrez who is also the concurrent national head of the membership committee. special projects was also created and is headed by dodie principe. we are also thinking of creating a para-legal team to focus mostly on environmental issues and I.P. concerns. while this plan is still nebulous, atty. twyla rubin of UPM has agreed to help and has committed to create a framework to advance this end.

with the appointment of new committee heads, all previous committee members are now deemed removed unless re-appointed by the new heads.

as ive said, it takes two to tango. therefore i also challenge the members to show their support to the fed by paying for your membership dues. we have agreed to waive the the arrears and you are only asked to pay for your dues for the year 2010. we have extended the deadline to fall on the mid-year congress in tiwi, albay this october. this is to enable you to raise the amount of P2,000.00 which represents your due for the year. should you fail to comply with this directive after the deadline, the officers have agreed to "de-friend" you and your club in our facebook accounts.

again i request everyone to submit their updated club profile. as of now only COAT has complied with this not so difficult request.

ROX to Host Lecture on Travel and Backpacking in the Philippines

As part of our advocacy to promote responsible mountaineering, Action & Fitness contributing writer Elmer Cabotage will conduct a lecture entitled Travel and Backpacking in the Philippines : An Introduction to the Basic Mountaineering Course on December 14, 2009 at the ROX-Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education. The talk includes practical tips on planning and organizing adventure travel, equipment selection, cultural sensitivity and a brief presentation on Leave No Trace Ethics. The lecture is presented in cooperation with the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Inc. Education Committee, Recreational Outdoor eXchange - CORE, Habagat, Action and Fitness magazine and supported by Columbia, Sea to Summit, Eagle Creek, Nalgene, and Nissan Navarra.

Experienced trainors can give you sound advise and firsthand information on the basic equipment you need. Remember expensive doesn’t mean it’s effective and designs from branded products may not suit your taste. Make sure it can withstand our harsh tropical environment.

As the host club of the 24th MFPI Midyear Federation Climb and Presidents’ Meeting in the province of Tarlac on October 21-24, 2009, with the theme “Paduyduy Hen a Tarlac”, UPORG wants you to be with us and enjoy the different outdoor activities we have prepared for you. Paduyduy is a thanksgiving ritual being practiced by the Aeta and the Abelling before harvested bounty are consumed.

Besides promoting responsible mountaineering and introducing new outdoor havens, the 2009 midyear congress aims to establish appreciation of indigenous culture and skills, while promoting eco-tourism. Also, it intends to encourage the usage of mountaineers’ outdoor agility and expertise in helping our less-served brothers and sisters in the mountainous areas that we frequently visit in our own hometown. Now we have our own adaptation of Paduyduy.

Mt. Manuggal Tree Planting

The Philippine Air Force and the Green Army in cooperation with the MFPI will have a tree planting activity at Sitio Cambagocboc, Balamban, Cebu on May 23, 2009. The activity will see to the planting of 1,000 seedling of fruit-bearing and hardwood trees on the slopes of the said area.

In this regard, we are inviting all Cebu orgs and individuals to be a part of this activity for the greening of mt. manunggal. interested orgs and individuals may confirm their participation to Allan Salazar in order to be listed and be included in the logistics and budget. you may contact allan at 0905-2763403.

Also there is a bill filed on Congress for the renaming of Mt. Manuggal to Mt. Ramon Magysasay in tribute to the late president. This endeavor is being spearheaded by Rep. Teofisto Guingona and Sen. Ramon Revilla.

Just show that mt. manuggal is now in the radar of govt. agencies and we are proud the mfpi is seen as a partner in the cause of mt. manuggal. this is now an opportunity for the members to show our solidarity with their cause. enough politicking already and lets devote our energies to something worthwhile.

For Corporate-based Outdoor/Mountaineering Clubs

As part of our effort to promote safe and responsible mountaineering, I will conduct an Introduction to Backpacking and LNT Ethics lecture to all interested MFPI affiliated and non-affiliated corporate-based outdoor / mountaineering clubs and organizations.

The lecture-presentation aims to:

* Update club members of current trends in Philippine mountaineering particularly the principles of Leave No Trace.
* Instill among fellow mountaineers sensitivity to indigenous communities
* Promote mountaineering to their colleagues, fellow employees and to recruit them to their club/organization.
* Prepare the novice mountaineer for the basic mountaineering course.
* Introduce the sport to in-house human resource specialists as an alternative venue to develop corporate wellness.
* Establish a working relationship between the club and their company through their HR department for future collaboration.

The 2-hour presentation include:

I. Mountaineering in the Philippines
II. Leave No Trace Environmental Awareness
III. Sensitivity to Indegenous People and Fellow Mountaineers
IV. Safety Tips on Backpacking and Mountaineering

Lecturer: Salvador Elmer C. Cabotage is currently Chairman of the Education Committee, MFPI and member of the UIAA Youth Commission. The Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI) thru the Sang-at Salug Outdoor Club, Inc. offers the hidden wonders of the Municipality of Ambaguio in the Province of Nueva Vizcaya for the 22nd Mid-Year Climb.

All roads lead to Poblacion, Ambaguio on October 24 to 28, 2007 as fellow mountaineers, outdoor organizations and enthusiasts, local environment stakeholders, LGUs, National Offices and other organizations/clubs in the country converge for this event, with a theme: “Agpa-tagaytay”…Appreciating, Caring, and Protecting the Watersheds towards a balanced ecosystem.

About 300 participants are expected not only to experience but participate in various activities not only in climbing the four (4) mountains that is being offered but also seminars and workshops about Protection, Preservation and Conservation of our Environment, Herbal Medicine, Rattan Weaving, Tie Dying, Alpine Climbing, Basic Mountaineering Course and other relevant activities.

In The Beginning…

In a thorough and meticulous deliberation… during an MFPI congress not so long ago… the concept of Individual Members was forged with the prime objective of educating non Club members into practicing Responsible Mountaineering, believing that MFPI as the leading mountaineering institution has that innate responsibility.

And so, MFPI through its educators started the conduct of the nationwide Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) to beginners, freelance, non club-members, and outdoor enthusiast. Then came 2003, to put a structure... the entry of IMs was organized by batch/groups. First group agreed to have a project prior to becoming a full pledge IM, which became a practice for every batch (BMC and Group Project). Moreover, an MFPI congress officially coined IMs to RMs (Regular Members, to align it to the MFPI constitution)

From group 1, now we welcome the entry of group 28. Indeed, we are growing by the numbers. Each group given due recognition and credence every time a project with environmental consciousness and social relevance was successfully undertaken.

Beyond batches/groups, we know act united as we move further in strengthening our bond as we meet together, acquaint ourselves with each other, deliberate concerns, resolve issues, and move together as “ONE.”

Fellow IMs… may we officially invite you to attend our first Get Together activity dubbed as “RMs – Grand Eyeball” with the theme “Pagtagpuin, Pagbuklurin, Kilalanin.” This will be on September 29 – 30, 2007 at Camp Allen, Sta. We are currently working on a minimal numbers of participants to join us on this tree planting activity. But we are still working out until August 10, 2007 as tentative deadline so that we can prepare your shirt/id on time for the event on August 26, 2007.

A Call For Participation And Volunteers: Trees for Life

Dear MFPI Members and Friends,

On July 18, 2007, the Trees for Life Stewardship Declaration Ceremony will be held at the La Mesa Dam. This will coincide with the Presidential Proclamation Declaring La Mesa a Watershed Reservation.

I invite our members and friends to witness this ceremony. On this occassion, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will formalize the Stewardship Status of MFPI. MFPI has been put to task to rehabilitate the forest cover of our critical watersheds, national parks, NIPAS, protection forestlands, mining rehabilitation areas, open and denuded lands and riverbanks.

The Trees for Life Project is a joint undertaking of the DENR and Green Army Foundation. Our former MFPI President Regie Pablo is working closely with them. Around 20 Million seedlings has been allocated nationwide by DENR and the planting sites have been pre identified. We just need to provide the manpower support to rehabilitate the areas.

Any organization affiliated or not with MFPI are encourage to participate in this project. Please coordinate with Mr. Regie Pablo. He can be reached through his mobile number 0917-8173443 or regie@mfpi.org .

Furthermore, stewardship of this land is officially given to MFPI to care for and look after for a long period of time. it is imperative that you SEND at least one representative to come to this event so that further directions may be given to you as to the area that will be turned over to you for long term stewardship.

In behalf of MFPI IM Batch 24, we are to inform you that a tree nurturing activity will kick-off on August 26, 2007…

Currently, we are working on a minimal number of participants to join us in this event as the nature of the activity is purely tree nurturing only.

This project aims to rehabilitate the landslide prone areas along the zigzag road as well as protect the watershed from further erosion.

Greetings to all outdoor enthusiasts!

The Individual Members of the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. Batch 22. with a goal of promoting environmental awareness and fellowship to all advocates of nature will conduct its first Batch project dubbed as “ABKD” (Akyat sa Banoi Kalakip ay Dunong). This event aims to distribute school supplies for the children of Banoi and basic medical supplies such as medicine and vitamins for the adults who lives along the trail of the said mountain. The event was scheduled on May 26-27, 2007, likewise this activity carries with it an awareness program that will expose the participants to the importance of nature conservation by experiencing the beauty of mountains

In this regard, we invite you and your club/organization to partake in this worthwhile event. Registration fee is Php 600 which will cover the transportation (bus ride Alabang to Jump off Point and back to Batangas City), commemorative t-shirt, ID, certificate of participation, meal for the first day (lunch & dinner), beach and Rappelling. Part of the proceeds from this activity will be donated to the MFPI Batch 22 fund. Part will also be used to finance the environmental awareness and support to other IM project. The targeted number of participants for this event is 50 on a first come-first serve registration basis.

Project Scope:

At the jump-off of Kairukan Falls is the humble community village of Sitio Kanawan. Although Kairukan Falls generates interest from many mountain climbers, the village is in need of support both in generating income as well as education.

The project is two fold:

* Renovation of two bathrooms – to provide a clean and functional bathroom in order to generate income from visitors.
- One bowl is broken – need to replace
- Other bowl to be cleaned
- Needs piping for water
- Lighting
- Extension of flooring just outside the bathroom
- Education & School Supplies – to promote education and provide adequate materials for the children of the community’s school.
* School needing books, supplies, etc.

It is our aim to establish a sustainable program/project that deals with the community’s needs as well as aids them in being self-sustaining and self-sufficient.

Have you ever felt sheer excitement about things to come, without knowing whether it will do well or bad?

On 17 march 2007 at, 3:30am, the SAGA Mountaineers arrived at the assembly point at Baliwag Transit Terminal in Cubao, Quezon City. From there we were joined by our Group Representative Sir John Rolan Cruz together with Sir Emmanuel "Maning" Licudine of Outdoor Addicts. Maning and his crew helped the project by fillingin for the other batch members, that are busy from school and work. Together with John, they exerted enough effort to attain our goal.

At 5:15 am, the bus was occupied with people from various walk of life--from student to professional--we converged with one purpose, the TULONG SA MADLUM," a project of Regular members of Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI) group 20 consisting of Medical Mission, Book Drive, and a Feeding Program at Sitio Madlum Brgy. Sibul San Miguel, Bulacan.

It was an honor to the entire group 20 that the President of MFPI Mr. Reggie Pablo graced the project.

Upon arriving at the town proper of San Miguel Bulacan the group was picked up by a dump truck that was scheduled for Sitio Madlum. Everyone had a taste of adventure. It was a bumpy ride through a dusty road with dangling electric wires and tree branches.

At 9:05 a.m., we finally arrived at Brg. Sibul Sitio Madlum. The advance party was fully prepared. The books were already loaded at the jeep scheduled for transport to the schools and daycare center of Sito Madlum. The smell of freshly cooked Macaroni Soup "sopas" greeted the group. As the children were fed,the doctors, and nurses did check-ups for the locals. The general check-up included blood pressure assessment and distribution of prescribed medicines and vitamins courtesy of Bulacan Congresswoman Connie Dy, Medical Center Trading Corp., and BJR Paramedic Trading.

After a scrumptious lunch, all the participants went to the Bayukbok Cave where we faced holes not lower than 1 foot.

After caving, We went back to our camp, which was in an open area of abandoned rice field with its center as our social area. It was an ideal place for some 300 tents to be pitched. The socials included a raffle of mountaineering gears and gift certificates courtesy of the sponsors.

The next day, most of the group members hiked and rappelled. Some chose to stay by the river and take a dip at the cold running water of Sitio Madlum. The water is cooled by the massive walls of rocks, boulders, and cliffs that casts a shade around it.

We will not only Leave a Trace on trails and campsites, but we will use our experiences to better our values and wisdom and leave a mark in the MFPI community.LEAVE NO TRACE...

MFPI-RM grp20 is composed of both Outdoor Addicrs, Saga Mountaineers and some freelance climbers. We would like to thank the following : Mr. Regie Pablo, MFPI president for observing and joining our cause on the two day events of our project. Mr. Dodie Principe, VP-Luzon MFPI, for supporting us. Mr. Mar Melendrez BMC instructor-luzon, for encouraging and teaching us the correct values not only in the mountains but in life as well. 2nd MFPI Luzon Summit

Dear All,

We are inviting everyone to join the 2nd MFPI Luzon Summit on Apr 4-9, 2007 to be held in Bontoc, Mt. Province. Theme for this year's summit is "Isang Bundok, Isang Tribu".

The week-long celebration includes 3 simultaneous climbs of the Bontoc Circuit Trail and will be capped with celebration of the Lang-ay Festival on april 9. The Lang-ay Festival is a cultural and wine festivities held every first week of April to showcase the cultural practices of the province.

We will also be having seminars on the local culture. The event is a good venue also to explore and discover Mt. Province -- a province rich in natural resources and cultural practives. Know more about the place and the people.

The event coincides with Holy Week -- this is one option -- not your usual-- for you to observe Holy Week.

Registration fee for members is P1,000 (P1,500 for non-mfpi members) plus P1,200 transportation (Mnl-Bontoc- Mnl). We only have limited slots for transporation -- first come, first served basis. Thus, pls register early. Registration is until March 14 only.

4th Visayas Mountain Festival

It is an honor and privilege that this year our group, the Antique Mountaineering Society, Inc. (AMSI) was chosen to lead the hosting of the 4th Visayas Mountain Festival.

The venue of the festival scheduled on March 2-6, 2007 will be at Mount Nangtud in Barbaza and Mount Madja-as in Culasi. These mountains are known for their rich natural diversities and majestic peaks. Base camp activities will be held at the idyllic Camp Eupre, Cadiao, Barbaza.

Various mountaineering groups from other regions under the umbrella of the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc.(MPFI) will converge to promote mountaineering as an ecological friendly activity and a fast growing adventure sports in the country.

Base camp activities such as mountain biking, trekking and spelunking will be held at Camp Eupre, an idyllic hang-out for nature lovers while water sports will be held at the spectacular Batabat reef area.

AMSI also intends to highlight the activity by giving tribute to Antique’s folk hero and mountaineer, the late Governor Evelio B. Javier. He is remembered for this legacy and contribution by pioneering mountain adventure and upland development in our province. Consequently, a symbolic marker at the peak of Mount Nangtud, where the late Governor once roamed, will be installed as tribute to his commendable achievement in mountaineering.

Likewise, an Environment Forum and Basic Mountaineering Course under the context “Earth Alert: Ravaged Environment, Beckons Disaster” and “Leave No Trace” that will be participated by the LGU’s and academe will cap the activities.

Knowing fully well that you are equally zealous to be part of this event, “dali, ron”, AMSI enjoins you to “conquer a dream, takras ta!”

We are happy to report to you that we are now finalizing our preparations for the 2nd Luzon Mountaineering Summit to be held at Bontoc, Mountain Province, April 4-9 2007.. The last trail survey shall be conducted by PALMC Team on 1-4 Feb 07. We will be using 3 routes namely: North, East and South. Participants shall be distributed to the different trails as they register. We will need advance registration and payment as these dates fall on Holy Week and we expect many people will take advantage of the long vacation. Bus seats are rather limited, unless you're bringing your own transpo.

Registration Forms and instruction will follow shortly.

Please go through the itinerary. Take note of April 3 where you have to make a choice which route to take from Manila to Bontoc, as well as departure times and travelling times.

We will appreciate it very much if you can help us disseminate the information to our MFPI Club members. Likewise, if you have suggestions and or comments to improve the program and ensure success of the Summit, please don't hesitate to advise us.

Of hand, Tentative Participation Fee is Php1000.00 Transpo expense f from Manila and back to Manila is not included. You will have to add the bus fares (we will advise how much) to get reservations and be assured of a seat to Bontoc.

Last November, me and three group members decided to go to Cambulo, Ifugao to do an acular. For a project. For a requirement. For an MFPI I.D. We have a project, we announced to a certain barangay official and some curious mothers with chidren lurking from behind the wooden benches. Then we get to a dialogue. And for a while, we knew that we have a purpose in going to Cambulo than just a membership in mountaineering federation. It wasn't Divine intervention, or it might be, but something made us realize that day. And that's giving back something to our brothers and sisters in the far-flung area like Cambulo where its people still live in its ancient culture and ways.

Last January 13, we came back to Cambulo. This time, there are 58 of us. All loaded with our simple gift of books and school supplies. That day was liberating. And until this day, we feel the joy of sharing that we hope will continue to shine on us in our future climbs.

Bicol Relief Operation

The MFPI is coordinating a relief drive for the victims of the Bicol land slide. We are working in cooperation with PHILTRANCO who has generously allowed us to transport whatever donation we can collect through their bus lines.

All donations (clothes, water, dry goods, etc) will be collected in PHILTRANCO'S PASAY STATION on friday december 8 @ 7-830pm ONLY!! we will appreciate any and all help that can and will be extended. I will personally be there to recieve and document your donation.

One requirement is that all donations, what ever they may be, should be properly packaged (naka-box na't sealed) and labeled. Kasabay natin ang GMA Kapuso, so we dont want the people in Legaspi to be confused.

Our donations are going to be picked up by George Cordivilla and his group and they will distribute in areas not reached by commercial donations. Maglalakad ng nakabackpack for short. They will wait for our donations in the legaspi booking office of Philtranco, the bus will leave by 9pm...10-12 hours later, it will be in Bicol.

Luzon Summit

To all MFPI Mountaineering Clubs:

PAL Mountaineering Club will host the 2nd Luzon Summit on April 1- 7, 2007. This will be held at the Cordilleras. We have developed the Bontoc Circuit where different teams shall be formed and will use different routes. Trails are the ones used by the locals since pre-hispanic time. On the last day of the trek (4days) all teams shall converge and spend overnight at Sagada. The following day, we will motor to Bontoc and participate in the Lang-ay Festival. We are official guests of Mt Province. During Lang-ay, all the different tribes that comprise the Mt Province shall meet in Bontoc for cultural presentations. This is a very colorful event. Itinerary shall be posted later. While we are not yet accepting reservations, those interested may mark these dates in their calendar or signify their interest thru email.

Costings shall be published as well. Once we reach the ideal number of participants (manageable number) so as preserve the trails, we will close the registration.

this is open to all MFPI registered mountaineering Clubs of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

To All,

We would like to inform everyone that Mt. Makiling is temporary close to Trekkers and Bikers. This is declared by the UPLB Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (UPLB-MCME) due to damages on Los Baños and Sto. Tomas Trail brought by Typhoon Milenyo. Trekkers and bikers are not allowed to enter beyond the Registration Area of MCME, as there are dangers of falling trees/branches including land slides due to loose soil. The trail starting from the Agila Base up to Peak 2 down to Sto. Tomas trail has suffered massive landslides.

MCME Foresters have reported that there was a flash flood from Mt. Makiling that happened during the height of typhoon which swept 6 houses and killed 14 persons at Brgy. Bagong Silang (near the Bay - Los Baños Boundary). Mt. Makiling is now under assessment of Geologists.

MCME Foresters have forecasted that it will take months to restore the trail and they will announce as soon as the mountain is safe for trekking and biking.

Update on Philippine Team in Cho Oyu

Update lang on Philippine Team climbing Cho Oyu..

The team made it to the summit plateau but had to turn back 100 meters from the true summit because of the strong winds and fist-sized hailstones. The team only started using oxygen at 7,000 meters, while Karina Dayondon went all the way without oxygen. Regie Pablo has frostbitten fingers. All of them are now safely in Kathmandu where Regie will get medical treatment. They hope to return to Manila Thursday or Friday next week.

Outdoor Recreation Group (up org) would like to invite you once again for another fun-filled event where-in teams from school, corporate based clubs/orgs to test their skills amongst fellow mountaineer. And we also would like to encourage our regular members to form their own eleven (11) person team.
Our venue will be our base camp and tent area. Existing wash and comfort rooms, picnic benches and ihawan portion will be made available for all.

The lanai will serve as our awarding and concert area.
Day-hike to nearby mountains and hillside, tour around the park and water-based activities will be made available for guests and non-participating members.

1. The event is open to all MFPI members.
2. Each team will be composed of eleven (11) members. No limit to the no. of team entries per club/org and regular member group.
3. The skills Olympic team event will have seven (7) categories and shall be called individual events. Team members will be designated to the ff:

a. Stove Operation, one (1) team representative
b . Ropemanship, one (1) team representative
c. Tent-pitching, one (1) team representative
d. Search and Rescue, four (4) team representatives
e. Orienteering, two (2) team representatives
f . Climbathon, one (1) team representative
g. Cook-fest, one (1) team representative

*** Speed climbing event - Tentative.

The team with the most points earned in the individual event will be declared over-all champion. Individual awards will also be given to winning participants.

1. Each team will have a team manager; this person will represent the team during orientation and meetings.
2. Last day for the submission of entry will be on November 9, 2006.
3. Participants’ orientation and marshals briefing on November 9, 2006 8:30pm Pioneer Grill, Pioneer Street, Manda.
4. Mechanics will also be provided on the said orientation date.
5. No registration fee. No cash prizes as of yet, except for give-away.

Transportation: Tarlac city to eco-park, San Jose v.v., also around the park area will be provided by the Province of Tarlac.

1. Introduction

The MFPI BMC Instructors Accreditation is designed to identify qualified trainers and to develop their training skills through a comprehensive apprenticeship program.

2. Goal

2.1 To immediately address the training needs of the MFPI

2.2 To raise the technical and professional standards of BMC instruction to UIAA standards.

2.3 To identify BMC training program facilitator.

2.4 To standardize the entire training procedure conducted in the MFPI

3. Rationale

3.1 Recent achievements made by local mountaineers raised the level of consciousness in the sport of mountaineering. As a result, an increase in participation in outdoor activities particularly backpacking, camping and mountaineering is anticipated.

3.2 This influx of adventure tourists will require the services of professional BMC instructors to provide training in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable wilderness experience.

3.3 There are only a few accredited instructors, most of whom are based in major cities and so therefore anyone can claim to be a BMC instructor.

3.4 Basic mountaineering course trainings are loosely organized by non-accredited instructors.

3.5 While MFPI accredited clubs conduct their own in-house training, few instructors have any formal, consistent and comprehensive training.

3.6 Several causes of mountaineering accidents are attributed to limited outdoor experience and the absence of competent mountaineer training program.

3.7 Lack of information on relevant issues such as the environmental, social and physical aspects may result to a lasting negative impression on the sport.

3.8 Although risk can never be eliminated, proper training can help minimize it. Climbing skills alone are not enough. Mountaineering experience and training, as well as evaluation of specific skills, are essential to maximize competence and greatly reduce potential hazards.

3.9 The BMC Instructors Accreditation is the best intervention to identify, qualify and accredit individuals to conduct the MFPI Standard Basic Mountaineering Course.

4. Who can be accredited and certified?

4.1 Any member of MFPI-accredited clubs in good standing and has sufficient knowledge of the fundamentals of the Basic Mountaineering Course and related theoretical background.

4.2 Applicant should have conducted the BMC in their club/organization the past 2 years.

5. Accreditation process

5.1 MFPI conducts the accreditation program and posts an announcement on the MFPI website.

5.2 Interested party writes a letter of intent and presents it together with their curriculum vitae and a recommendation letter from their club president

5.3 These are sent by e-mail (scanned endorsement letters) or courier to the MFPI Vice-Presidents for Luzon, Vizayas and Mindanao for evaluation. They are then sent to EduCom for endorsement.

5.4 Applicants are required to attend the instructor�s meeting during the MFPI congress (Mid-year or Annual) for presentation to the MFPI Board and Club/Org Presidents.

5.5 Applicants are assigned to apprentice under an accredited instructor for a minimum period of 4 months up to such time the apprentice completes other requirements as required by the Education Committee (i.e conduct BMC under the supervision of the designated instructor, first aid certification, etc.)

5.6 Apprentice is required to attend the immediate MFPI congress for the Trainer�s Seminar, Practicum and qualifying examination.

5.7 Results are processed to determine successful Trainers and sends list to the MFPI ExeCom for processing of controlled certificates.

5.8 Memorandum of Understanding (valid for two years) is signed between MFPI and trainers before Certificates of Accreditation are awarded.

6. Roles of an MFPI Accredited BMC Trainer

6.1 Organize and post BMC schedules by informing the EduCom Chairman for dissemination

6.2 Conduct the Basic Mountaineering Course at least twice every year.

6.3 Submission of waiver and attendance sheet. As much as possible acquire insurance coverage for the duration of the course.

6.4 Signs the Personal Information Sheet (PIS) to certify the attendance of the participants.

6.5 Administers the Program Evaluation Form to be filled-up by participants and then sent to EduCom for evaluation.

6.6 Submits Membership forms to MemCom immediately after conducting the BMC.

6.7 Attend the MFPI Instructor�s Seminar Series once every two years as part of their continuing education/accreditation program

6.8 Failure to comply will result to termination or non-renewal of their accreditation.

What is Individual Membership?

Individual Membership is the new registration system of the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI). It was presented during the Mt. Mandalagan Presidents Meeting and Midyear Climb in 1999.

Who can apply for Individual Membership?

Any Filipino citizen having a permanent residence in the Philippines and engaged in mountaineering can apply for Membership.

What are the advantages of Individual Membership?

MFPI

Individual Members can help the Federation harness its manpower potential. For several years, MFPI has relied on its member clubs in most of its activities. However, the point of contact is limited to the clubs' President or Representative. This presents problems when a change in the clubs' leadership happens and is not communicated outright to the Federation. With the new structure, an Organization-to-Member relationship is established. This would ensure a faster and efficient communication process. As a result, activities will be more coordinated. This would also help the Federation monitor its manpower base. This is essential in mobilizing people for lobbying exercises or any activity that the Federation deems necessary.

Member Clubs

The Individual Membership setup will strengthen the training programs of member clubs. With Basic Mountaineering Course as the priority prerequisite of Individual Membership, the Federation would ensure that BMC program of member clubs conform with the standard BMC format formulated by the Council of Trainors. This standard format will complement the existing training program of member clubs. Instructors will also be provided by the Federation for their BMC requirement or related training upon the request of member clubs subject to availability of instructors.

This new set-up will also help member clubs to instill discipline within their membership. As member clubs, they have the right to endorse their members to MFPI for Individual Membership. In the same manner, Member Clubs can decline to endorse their members to the MFPI Individual Membership for causes that the Club has determined to be reasonable.

This will also help member clubs to account for inactive and past members who will decide to apply for Individual Membership to MFPI through their mother clubs.

Individuals

The Federation has realized that there are individuals who have no club affiliations yet possess good potentials as an MFPI member. The Individual Membership setup will provide a venue for deserving mountaineers to gain recognition as an MFPI member faster and easier. Yet the prerequisites for Membership ensures the Federation of the capability and skills of its members.

Individual Members will also be empowered to form/join committees that have been outlined in the Federations' goals. This ensures a wider participation in MFPI projects. They will also take part in shaping the future of the Organization by exercising their right to vote.

What are the prerequisites of Individual Membership?

A. For Individuals with Club affiliation (MFPI accredited)
• Accomplished Individual Membership Form signed by their club President
• Registration Fee (P200.00)
• 1 1X1 ID Picture (colored)

B. For Individuals with no Club Affiliation
• Attend the BMC Training Program of MFPI

What are the benefits of an MFPI Individual Member?

Individual Members of MFPI are entitled to the following:

• Inclusion in MFPI's members-only discussion board and chat room

Will the Federation still accept Club's as members?

Yes, MFPI will still accept Clubs for MFPI accreditation. They have the right to endorse Individual Members to MFPI and will have the exclusive right to bid for the Hosting of Federation Climbs. The same requirements as has been asked in the past will still be required.

When does MFPI conduct BMC Training?

The Federation will hold BMC Training every Annual Congress and MFPI Mid-year Climb. However, for Individuals who can organize themselves into a group of 30, a special BMC Training can be requested for a minimal fee and subject to the availability of an Instructor. A Request for BMC Training can be sent to the President of MFPI, together with the list of participants, training dates, and venue. The participants will also shoulder the accommodation expenses of the Instructor.

How much does a BMC Training cost?

The BMC Training is free for registered participants of Federation Climbs. A minimal fee depending on the number of participants will be charged to Individuals who will request a special BMC Training.

When is the implementation of the Individual Membership?

The new Membership structure will be implemented on January 1, 2001.

How much is the registration fee?

Registration fee is P200.00 annually.

You don't have to be a celebrity to be a star - just go for clean power! Sign the Star Power petition. Tell the Philippine Department of Energy: by the year 2010, at least 10 percent of the energy needs of the Philippines must be come from wind, solar and modern biomass power!

Our world today is hotter than it has been in two thousand years. The 1990's was the warmest decade in history, and 1998 the warmest year. By the end of the century, if current trends continue, the global temperature will likely climb higher than at any time in the past two million years. Humanity is largely responsible for this change. The choices we make today will clearly decide the climate of the future.

For more than a century, people have relied on fossil fuels such as oil and coal for their energy needs, with coal being the dirtiest fossil fuel. Burning fossil fuels such as coal releases into the atmosphere massive amounts of the global warming gases such as carbon dioxide -the most significant greenhouse gas. The more we release carbon dioxide, the more we increase the "greenhouse effect" on our planet by trapping in heat and increasing global temperatures and creating catastrophic impacts on the planet's ecosystems - impacts that will hit developing countries the hardest.

There is strong evidence that extreme weather events – such as hurricanes, floods, droughts and heat waves – are increasing because of climate change. According to the Financial Initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the economic costs of global warming are doubling every decade. The cumulative number of people affected by disasters rose to two billion in the 1990s, up from 740 million in the 1970s. Virtually all of these millions were concentrated in poorer countries. Rising sea levels, melting glaciers, massive flooding, decline of agricultural yields, an increase in risk of species extinction and biodiversity loss - these are the other impacts that we may face if we don't act today to stop climate change.

Solutions to global warming already exist but they will not work unless we use them. Today, renewable power from the sun, the wind and modern biomass provides less than 1% of the entire energy needs of the Philippines. To stop global warming, we need to embrace solutions. We need to switch to renewable energy and to increase energy efficiency.

Prompted by the recent success of Team Philippines’ climb to Mount Everest, the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Inc. (MFPI), an umbrella organization of the country’s top mountaineering groups, has started an online store for mountaineering equipment.

The store is within the MFPI’s official website ( www.mfpi.org/store). Though all of the products being sold are still backpacks and sleeping bags, the group intends to expand their product lines to boots, gloves, cold-gear suits, tents, headgear and other climbing and hiking equipment.

The website also uses Mozcom’s NetPresence and PayEasy facilities for a virtual shopping cart and payment system.

Likewise, a Megalink ATM payment system is also available.

Items purchased can be delivered to any location in the Philippines through Federal Express.

The service is currently available to MFPI’s 30,000 local members, though none members can register online to make their purchases.

Green Philippine Highways

Dear MFPI Members and Friends,

Yesterday, August 14, 2006, a Memorandum of Agreement has been signed between MFPI and DENR for our organizations' participation in DENR's Green Philippine Highways Project.

The Green Philippine Highways Project is DENR's massive tree nurturing project that encompasses the major arteries in Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao as well as major thoroughfares in Metro Manila. Initially it aims to cover:

- The 2,176 kilometer Pan-Philippine Highway that stretches from Laoag City through Cagayan to Davao City

- The 439 - kilometer Manila North Road that meanders from Laoag City through La Union to Bulacan,

- The 824 kilometer West Nautical Highway stretching from Batangas City through Mindoro, Aklan, and Negros Oriental to Sibugay and Zamboanga

- Metro Manila thoroughfares covering North Luzon Expressway from Balintawak to Quezon City to Malinta; Commonwealth Avenue from Quezon Memorial Circle to Fairview going to La Mesa Dam; C-5 Road, Pasig River to entry of Luzon Expressway; and from Dela Rosa Street to Zobel Street, Makati City.

The Green Philippine Highways Project aims to arrest our deterioarating air quality. We have the second worst in the ASEAN, next only to Indonesia. As signatory to this project, I encouraged all our members and friends and anybody who cares about the quality of the air we breathe, to participate in this project. Initially, a 250 meter stretch in C-5 has been assigned to MFPI as planting site. But any organization is welcome to adopt any other identified areas. DENR will provide the seedlings while the adoptor organizations will take care of nurturing the tree as well as the cost of the signage.

The Project will kick off on August 25, 2006 with a nationwide tree planting activity. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will lead the ceremony in kilometer 0 in Luneta. Church bells from all over the country will ring to signify the start of the activity. Anyone who wants to join MFPI in its assigned area in C-5, please contact me personally.

Jungle Environment Survival Training will be moved to Aug 19-20, 2006.

This activity will provide insights and lectures on the following:

- identification of poisonous and non-poisonous plants
- identification of edible plants, including those that contains potable water
- identification of herbal and medicinal plants
- remedies for cuts and bites
- starting a fire using materials from the forest
- cooking without a stove and a cookset
- night fishing
- etcetera

The activity starts with a briefing at 11am of Aug 19, 2006.
The trek inside the lush jungles of SBMA follows right after the briefing.
The actual lecture and demonstration takes place on the trail while trekking.
The trek will take about 3-4hours.
A designated campsite will be chosen for the night.

insect repellant
stoves and cookset (optional, you will be taught to cook without these!!)
food (optional, you will be taught how to look for food in the jungle!!)

Trainors Training / Trainors Accreditation Program

To all,

Thank you for your interest, one of the objectives of the Trainors Meeting in Bacolod in October 2003 during the Mid-year Federation is to address the need to establish a Standard Training program for mountaineers all over the country. Consequently we also have to address the need to develop a Trainors Training Program to facilitate the Basic Mountaineering Course.

The federation accredited 10 instructors to initially conduct the Standard BMC, we also identified other trainors from different mountaineering clubs to apprentice under any of the accredited instructors for evaluation and recommendation. So far, the Education Committee has accredited 2 from the Visayas (Eugene Abarquez and Nino Capangpangan who apprenticed under Randy Su).

Although we already have the Tropical Mountaineering Trainors Training Program it will require substantial resource to implement it. For the meantime we intend to conduct a “Trainors Accreditation Program” the details of which will be finalized in a meeting in Cebu this August. It is our plan to conduct the accreditation program in Davao this October.

For the meantime we have initially identified criteria for selecting participants for the accreditation program (Note: these requirements are not final).

a. Member of an MFPI accredited club in good standing
b. Has facilitated BMC training for the club within the past 2 years
c. Recommendation letter from the club president
d. Letter of intent from the participant
e. First Aid Certification (preferably from Red Cross)

The accreditation program is just the initial phase, successful participant will be assigned to go on apprenticeship (by conducting BMC in their clubs, other MFPI clubs and MFPI organized events) under an accredited instructor, until such time that they pass the final evaluation and henceforth recommendation and approval from the MFPI.

I hope I fueled your interest to pursue perhaps even a career in mountaineering, we intend to professionalize the field and plan to have the program accredited as a technical course by TESDA.

Hello to everyone,

The FPMEE ( First Philippine Mt Everest Expedition ) would like to thank all you guys for all the support and prayers. Without your help we don’t think we would be able to attain our dream.

There's been a lot of talk about what went on out there. Network wars and everything. Actually we really don’t care about them. At basecamp, members of both expedition freely interact with each other with no animosity whatsoever. We visited Romi's camp and even stayed there for meals and some chat. Out there we were helping each other. I don’t really know why you guys keep arguing about foolish ideas. Us Filipino mountaineers had no problems there at Nepal.

This is a shining moment for Philippine mountaineering, and so we must use this to forward our cause.
